Computer Science Professor Radu Sion was awarded $60,000 by Xerox to investigate regulatory compliance for document management infrastructures.

ABSTRACT
Dr. Radu Sion

Over 10,000 regulations govern the management of information in the US alone, in financial, life sciences, health-care industries and the government. These regulations impose a wide range of regulatory policies, ranging from information life-cycle management (e.g., mandatory data retention and deletion) to audit trails and storage confidentiality.

The overarching goal of this proposed work is to investigate regulatory compliance for document management infrastructures. One specific immediate focus will be on designing and prototyping secure document provenance mechanisms. Document provenance mechanisms are essential in many existing regulatory frameworks. For example, HIPAA mandates logging of access and change histories for medical records, and SOX requires secure documentation and audit trails for financial records.
