Graduate Admission

We are excited that you are considering applying to our Graduate Program. Due to the popularity of our graduate programs we are getting more than one thousand applications each year. We cannot respond to inquiries about the state of individual applications in a timely manner. So, please read carefully in order to make sure that your application is filled properly.

The requirements for admission into the program are spelled out in the Computer Science Graduate Program Handbook. Additional requirements of the Graduate School can be found here. To give you a general idea, we summarize these requirements below. You must read the above two documents to make sure that your application complies with all requirements.

  • Background in Computer Science at the level of five upper-division courses in the areas listed in the Graduate Handbook.
  • General GRE examinations are required. We do not have a priori lower limit for GRE scores -- it is decided on a year by year basis. However, it is typically very high, as our admission process is very competitive.

  • Subject GREs are not required, but are strongly encouraged for Ph.D. applicants.
  • TOEFL is required. The minimum TOEFL score must be 550 for paper tests and 213 for computerized tests.

  • International students are strongly encouraged to take the TSE test.

  • The nonrefundable application fee is $60.

The official GRE/TOEFL/TSE test score reports must be sent directly by ETS to Stony Brook University. Stony Brook's code for score reporting is 2548. You must also specify our Department's code so that the results will reach the Computer Science Admissions Committee in a timely manner. (We cannot make decisions before we see the official scores.) Our Department's code for GRE reporting is 0402; for TOEFL/TSE it is 78.

To be considered for admission, you must be a high achiever in the undergraduate program and have high grade-point average (GPA).
