SYSTEMS STAFF MONTHLY UPDATE, MARCH 2003
REMINDER - GRADUATE RESEARCH CONFERENCE THIS FRIDAY, MAY
2
See http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~csgsc/grc2003/agenda.html
for details on the day's programs.
Once again we would like to bring your attention to WREQ,
the online Systems problem reporting facility. Some of you are using
it already and ultimately all systems related problems, questions
or requests will be funneled through this tool.
There are significant benefits to you the user by using WREQ as
your problem reporting mechanism. Your request goes to the entire
staff simultaneously, so that the person best able to help you sees
it immediately. It is logged in a central location so that it cannot
accidently be overlooked in someone's mailbox. You will automatically
receive updates by email when the problem is either resolved or
updated along the path to resolution. Finally, you can look it up
online yourself at any point to see its status and any notes a staff
person may have made.
Online, go to http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~wreq/
to post a request, view a request, or see a tutorial on its use.
1. New/Upgraded Software for Solaris
Scp1 is available on the department hosts for connections to machines
which only support this protocol. Within the department you should
use scp2. (/usr/local/bin/scp1 and /usr/local/bin/scp2)
Stunnel has been installed in /usr/local on the Unix machines,
and a copy of the PC executable has been added to the software downloads
page. Stunnel is a program that can be used to encrypt tcp connections
inside SSL, so it could be used for example to make a secure connection
to the new SSL POP server. Instructions will be added to the FAQ
section on the web server on how to do this.
2. New/Upgraded Software on MS Windows
The DB2 server has been upgraded, both the hardware and the software.
The Rational Rose license has been renewed. If you need it for
your course work, please ask your professor to send mail to NTADMIN at cs dot sunysb dot edu.
Within the Graduate PC Lab (1239) we will start gathering statistics
on printer usage, so as to determine whether a quota system will
be necessary. Please use the printers responsibly by not printing
lengthy or personal material in the lab.
Please also do not abuse the printer physically in the course of
trying to change or fix a toner cartridge. If you have a problem
with the printer or it is low on toner send mail to NTADMIN at cs dot sunysb dot edu
and someone will take care of it. Physical damage to the printer
may cause it to be out of service for lengthy periods of time.
Citrix
When using MS Office on one of the Citrix machines, a directory
called H:\windows_recovery will be automatically created in your
home dir. Please do not delete this directory as Office will use
it as temporary work space.
3. Web
It will soon be possible to deploy servlets for research purposes
(not for classwork at this time) on intrawww. Please send mail to
WEBADM at cs dot sunysb dot edu if you have a web application in the form of a .war file
that you
are interested in deploying on intrawww.
4. Infrastructure Changes and Upgrades
New labs
Upgrades
The department POP server will also be upgraded. Please make sure
that your POP settings point to popmail.cs.sunysb.edu, and that
you are configured to not leave your mail on the server. After the
end of classes the POP server will be converted to accept only SSL
connections. The department FAQ pages will include client configuration
information. Also please check that your POP client is configured
to check for new mail at the default 10 minute interval. Send mail
to NTADMIN at cs dot sunysb dot edu if you need assistance with any of these settings.
Changes
The automatic gzip and compression features of the department ftp
server have been turned off as the result of a CERT advisory on
a new exploit for these features. When the server development team
fixes this security hole the feature can be re-enabled.
New Network Facilities
PCs and Laptops
Reminder that if you want to obtain Microsoft software through
the MSDNAA program you need to register at http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~msdnaa
and then take the resulting form to the library in order to check
out the CD. You cannot go directly to the library without registering
on the website as this would violate our licensing agreement with
Microsoft.
Plans are being drawn up for a centralized PC and laptop backup
facility.
The campus has signed a contract with Microsoft to supply Microsoft
Office XP for both the PC and MAC to all faculty and staff at the
University. In addition students with a GA, RA or TA appointment
qualify for the program. Details can be found at: http://clientsupport.stonybrook.edu/software/OfficeXP.shtml.
For personal use of this software please visit the link above and
follow instructions to obtain your copy. Copies for departmental
use will be available through the MSDNAA program.
New Facilities
Labs
The HP Sepia cluster in the Visualization Lab has been expanded
to 29 nodes. 28 nodes will be equipped with a nVidia Geforce FX
Ultra graphics cards.
Future plans
5. The Stony Brook Community
We are in the process of gathering together a listing of all software
available for free or minimal fee from the campus. This information
will be published on our software downloads page when complete.
Information on obtaining Mathematica for home use is available
at http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/FAQ/ObtainingMathematica.html
6. HOW TO REPORT A PROBLEM or MAKE A WORK
REQUEST
6a. First you should check the FAQ pages at:
http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/FAQ/index.html
There is also a link to an index of FAQs.
6b. If the answer to your question is not in the faq's you should
use wreq
to report the problem or make a work request.
There is a short blurb on wreq in the faq area (search by index)
Wreq lives at:
http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~wreq/
6c. You can also send email to
WREQ at cs dot sunysb dot edu
from your dept account, or campus account. The subject line should
cover what is wrong or what you need. The body of the email can
supply any details.
6d. Your problem report must include the following information
for us to be able to help you promptly:
1. The room you are working in, either room number or lab name.
2. The name of the host you are working on (hostname command in
Unix, machine number in 1239, the number written on the bookshelf
by your desk in the student offices).
3. The sequence of things you did just prior to having the problem
as best you recollect.
4. The exact text of any error message you see on the screen, or
a complete description of the problem that occured.
Please report problems promptly as they occur so they can be investigated
under the same set of conditions as far as possible.
When in doubt, feel free to send email to:
Unix and network problems: ROOT at cs dot sunysb dot edu
PC problems: NTADMIN at cs dot sunysb dot edu
