SYSTEMS STAFF MONTHLY UPDATE - APRIL 2004

WREQ Problem Reporting Tool
Email work requests and problem reports are now being entered into the WREQ problem reporting tool. You should submit all requests directly to WREQ and not to ntadmin or individual staff members. You can do this by posting a request through the web interface at: http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~wreq or simply by sending your email request to WREQ AT cs dot sunysb dot edu.

WREQ Problem Reporting Tool for Administrative Requests
There is now a WREQ Problem Reporting Tool for work requests directed to the department secretarial and administrative staff. You should use secwreq for requests such as requisitions, course room changes, office supplies, grade changes, room reservations, payroll issues, tuition issues, reimbursements and building management needs. This tool can be found at http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~secwreq or you can send mail to SECWREQ AT cs dot sunysb dot edu.

POPMAIL
Non-encrypted popmail service will end on 4/7/2004 at 8am. Set your popmail client to enable ssl and use port 995 to host
popmail.cs.sunysb.edu to retrieve email. The new popmail software is faster and more resistant to destroying mailboxes then the current version. The new popmail server will not allow you to keep mail older than 30 days on the server. You will have to accept a locally generated certificate. Further information will be available on the www FAQ area (popmail).

SSO/MSDNAA/DOWNLOADS/RESERVEROOM/SPAMOPTS/FACULTY-AREA
Will be available to any browser on the internet via HTTPS from www. The current software on intrawww will be discontinued on 4/7/2004 at 8am and will become available on https://www.cs.sunysb.edu:8081. You will have to accept a locally generated certificate. Further information will be available on the www FAQ area (sso, reserveroom, msdnaa).

PCs and Laptops
The Netsky family of viruses is flooding the internet. The current generation of email viruses grabs up addresses at random from the infected PC and uses them as both the originator and the recipient of the mail. This means that if a PC from which you have sent mail to department users becomes infected, those users now become the forged senders and recipients of more virus mail. Please take care to keep your home PC as well as all department PCs up to date with virus scanning software. This software is available for free download from our website. There is also information available on our FAQ pages http://www/FAQ/VirusesAndSpyware.html.

Information about Dial-ins from Home
For people with Voice Dialing Service on their home phone, Voice Dialing Service's beep is not long enough for a fax/modem to detect the dial tone. This will cause problems trying to use a modem to dial in to the department or to use a fax machine. Press *98 before connecting to the fax/modem. Pressing *98 will delay the Voice Dialing beep long enough for the fax/modem to detect a dial tone.

HOW TO REPORT A PROBLEM or MAKE A WORK REQUEST
First you should check the FAQ pages at:
http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~faq

There is also a link to an index of FAQs.
