SYSTEMS STAFF MONTHLY UPDATE - JANUARY 2005

WREQ Problem Reporting Tool
Email work requests and problem reports are now being entered into the WREQ problem reporting tool. You should submit all requests directly to WREQ and not to ntadmin or individual staff members. You can do this by posting a request through the web interface at: http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~wreq or simply by sending your email request to wreq AT cs dot sunysb dot edu.

There is now a WREQ Problem Reporting Tool for work requests directed to the department secretarial and administrative staff. You should use secwreq for requests such as requisitions, course room changes, office supplies, grade changes, room reservations, payroll issues, tuition issues, reimbursements and building management needs. This tool can be found at http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/~secwreq or you can send mail to SEQWREQ AT cs dot sunysb dot edu.

The Reserveroom tool is only accessible through the department Single Sign On facility at https://www.cs.sunysb.edu:8081/~sso/. Please delete any other references or bookmarks you have to the earlier version on intrawww.

INFORMATION ABOUT HOLDING EXAMS IN THE TRANSLABS
If you plan to hold exams in any of the labs, please email us well in advance, preferably at least 7 days, detailing us your requirements. In the past, we have been able to make provisions for the following:

  1. All students sign-on using a special recitation account
  2. Selectively disconnect Internet access from the Labs
  3. Students are provided with special instruction file which tells them how and where to save their work. The instruction file could include exercises too.
  4. An archive is created by backing up all student files.

The above setup requires a few test runs from the labs, hence an advance notice is very essential.

http://www.cs.sunysb.edu/cs@35/. Please spread the word among any alumni you know to register with the department via this page so that we can keep them informed of upcoming events.

Virus/Spyware/Security
The campus sent out the following announcement at the end of December that everyone should be aware of:

"It has come to my attention that a few of you may have received a bogus email from shirleystrumkenny@yahoo.com with instructions not to use the Solar System until after Jan 1 and to send your user ID/ password back to this address. Please disregard the instructions contained in the message.

Under no circumstances would anyone from Stony Brook University request that you send your user ID and password over email. I have filed a complaint with yahoo.com concerning the fraudulent use of this account and have reported this incident to the Police. Thank you in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

Richard W. Reeder
CIO"

Please also be aware that the Systems Staff of the department will never send out mail asking you to reply with your password or I.D. number, or asking you to open a particular attachment, nor will we ever send out mail signed "admin@cs".

Never send personal information of any kind over the internet. Never open any suspicious message and/or attachment. Never read your email on a PC without an up-to-date virus scanner running. See the department FAQ pages for complete information on configuring and securing your PC.
