Filter Junk Email

Q. How can I filter junk email in Netscape/Pine/Outlook/CDE?

  1. Netscape
  2. Pine
  3. Outlook
  4. CDE

Netscape:

  1. Within Netscape Messenger, select Edit -> Message Filters
  2. Click "New"
  3. Enter a name for the filter
  4. Fill in the criteria
  5. Choose an Action - NOTE: WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU CHOSE MOVE AND MOVE THE MESSAGES TO ANOTHER FOLDER WHERE YOU CAN SKIM THROUGH THEM AT YOUR LEISURE BEFORE DELETING - you do not want to take the chance that your filter does not perform as expected and deletes mail you wanted to keep.
  6. Click OK
  7. Click OK

Pine:

  1. From with Pine, select "M" (Main Menu), "S" (Setup), "R" (Rules)
  2. At the prompt, enter "F" (Filter)
  3. Enter "A" (to add a filter) or "?" for Help on Filters
  4. In the add filter screen, press return at any option to enter criteria
  5. Enter a nickname for the filter
  6. For general filtering, use the "AllText" pattern option - fill in some string of text you want to filter for if it appears in either the header or the body of the message, for example "make money"
  7. Most other defaults are OK, in particular, leave INBOX selected
  8. For the filter action, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU CHOSE MOVE AND MOVE THE MESSAGES TO ANOTHER FOLDER WHERE YOU CAN SKIM THROUGH THEM AT YOUR LEISURE BEFORE DELETING - you do not want to take the chance that your filter does not perform as expected and deletes mail you wanted to keep.
  9. When you are finished setting up your filter, select "E" (Exit Setup), then "Y" (Yes to commit changes) to save this specific filter, and then "E" and "Y" again to exit filter setup and return to the main menu.

Another way to quickly filter mail in Pine (this applies to mail which has already been received):

From with the message index:

  1. Press ";"
  2. You will see a prompt at the bottom: "SELECT criteria"
  3. Press "T" for Text
  4. You will be prompted at the bottom of the screen for the field you want to filter on
  5. Press "F" for From field (for example)
  6. Fill in the string you want to filter on and press Enter
  7. All the selected messages will have an X next to them
  8. To do something with the selected messages: Press "Z" for Zoom - the display will change to show only the selected messages
  9. Press "A" for Apply - you will see a list of options at the bottom of the screen
  10. Press "S" for Save - you will be prompted for the name of a folder to save them to
  11. NOTE: WE RECOMMEND YOU ALWAYS SAVE MESSAGES TO A FOLDER WHERE YOU CAN SKIM THEM LATER AT YOUR LEISURE BEFORE DELETING - YOU DO NOT WANT TO RISK DELETING MAIL IF YOUR SELECTION CRITERIA DOES NOT WORK IN THE WAY YOU ANTICIPATED
  12. When you are done, press "Z" to Unzoom and return to the standard Index.
