

Windows 2000 Department Dialup
1. Go to Start->Settings->Network and Dialup Connections. You can
also access it by going to Control Panel and selecting Network and Dialup
Connections. Additionally, it is listed under the Control Panel in the
Windows Explorer Window.
2. Click on File->New Connection.
3. Select "Dial up to the internet" and click "Next"
4. This will start the "Internet Connection Wizard".
5. Select the option as shown below and click "Next".

6. Select "I connect through the phone line and a modem" and
Click "Next".

7. If you live in the "631" area code, then unselect the option
"Use area code and dialing rules". Otherwise, leave it enabled.
Also, enter the phone number for dialup access here "6327670".

8. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
9. Over here you have two choices.
- Logging in Manually (recommended)
- Logging in Automatically
Logging in Manually Your password is not stored anywhere in the computer, so it
is more secure. However, you have to enter your password every time you
dialup to the department.
Select the option "Log on manually". Click "Ok"
and go to step 10.

Logging in Automatically
Your password is stored in a clear text file and can be read by someone
who has access to your computer. It is insecure. However, you do not
have to enter your login information every time you dialup to the department.
Right click on the link below and choose "Save As" and save it to
a suitable location for example, c:\winnt\system32\ras where c:\winnt
is your windows installation folder.
login.scp
Edit the login script provided to you, usually named login.scp. In
the place of "username" put your CS login name. In place
of password, put your CS "password". If my username was
"foo" and password was "foopass" my login script
would look like

In the Advanced window, click on Browse and select your file that
you just edited with your username and password. Click "Ok".

10. Ignore the username and password on this screen, since this is not
transmitted to the dialup server. Click on "Next" and ignore
the message concerning "blank passwords" if it comes up.

11. Under Connection name, you can fill out whatever you like. In the
picture, it is shown as "sbcs".

13. Select "No" for setting up Internet mail and Click "Next".

14. Click on "Finish".

15. This will start the dial up networking window. Click on the "Settings"
button.

16. Select the option "Dial whenever a network connection is not
present" to prevent Windows from dialing if you are connected on
another kind of network e.g. LAN, wireless. Click "Ok".

17. Click "Connect". If you selected to connect automatically,
you don't need to do anything and you are done. If you selected manual
connection, then a black terminal window will pop up after you modem establishes
a connection to the department. In place of user name, enter your department
username. Enter the password, when prompted to do so. The password is
hidden and will not be displayed. When a prompt "csterm3:" follows,
type ppp and hit enter. As soon as you see junk characters, hit "continue".
A small icon should appear at the bottom right of your taskbar indication
that you are connected. This step has to be repeated every time you connect
to the CS department.
