

Win9x Department Dialup
Important Note for Windows 95/98/Me Users :
DO NOT touch the Dialup Adapter Settings found through Control Panel / Network.
Those TCP/IP settings should be left in their default state, which should include:
IP address obtained automatically
Gateway left blank
Disable DNS
Make all changes through the Dialup Networking folder.
You have two methods to connect to the department.
Logging in Automatically
Right click on the link below and choose "Save As" and save
it to a suitable location.
login.scp

Edit the login script provided to you, usually named
login.scp. If you haven't been given this file, you
can download it from login.scp. In the place of
"username" put your CS login name. In place of
password, put your CS "password". Save this
file in a suitable place on your hard disk, for example
c:\windows.

Be aware, that this login information is stored
in plain text. You have to protect this file from
unauthorized users. If you would not like to store this
information in a text file, please skip this section
and go to "Logging in manually"

Find and run Dial-Up Networking from the Accessories menu.

Double click on the New Connection Icon.

Name this Connection ( for example, CS). Select the modem
you wish to use, if you have more then one. Then click on
the Next Button.

Enter the phone number for dialing into the department
usually 632 7670.

Open your new connection's Properties window either by
right clicking over your new connection's icon or
from the File menu.

Next select the Options tab and make sure that the "Bring
up a terminal window after dialing" is NOT checked. Click
O.K.

Now Click on the Server Type tab
Make sure:

The server type is PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51,
Internet.

The only protocol selected is TCP/IP.

Log on to network is selected.

Enable software compression is selected.

Click the TCP/IP Setting button.

Server assigned IP address is selected
-
Server assigned name server addresses is selected.

Use default gateway on remote network

Click on the Scripting tab

Select the login script file that we edited before
i.e. login.scp.

Click the OK buttons until the properties window closes.
Logging in manually
- Find and run Dial-Up Networking from the Accessories menu.
- Double click on the New Connection Icon.
- Name this Connection ( for example, CS). Select the modem you wish
to use, if you have more then one. Then click on the Next Button.
- Enter the phone number for dialing into the department usually 6327670.
- Open your new connection's Properties window either by right clicking
over your new connection"s icon or from the File menu.
- Next select the Options tab and make sure that the "Bring up a terminal
window after dialing" is checked. Click O.K. This check box is the most
important difference between logging in manually and automatically.
- Now Click on the Server Type tab
Make sure:
- The server type is PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51, Internet.
- The only protocol selected is TCP/IP.
- Log on to network is selected.
- Enable software compression is selected.
- Click the TCP/IP Setting button.
- Server assigned IP address is selected
- Server assigned name server addresses is selected.
- Use default gateway on remote network
Click the OK buttons until the properties window closes.
- Double left button mouse click on the "CS" shortcut in
dial up networking.
A black terminal window will pop up after you modem establishes a connection
to the department. In place of user name, enter your department username.
Enter the password, when prompted to do so. The password is hidden and
will not be displayed. When a prompt "csterm:" follows, type
ppp and hit enter. As soon as you see junk characters, hit "continue"
or press "F7". A small icon should appear at the bottom right
of your taskbar indication that you are connected. This would be repeated
every time you connect to the CS department.
