

Windows XP Department Dialup
- Go to Start->Control Panel. Select Network and Internet Connections.
Under Pick a Task, select "Create a connection to your network
at your workplace"
OR
Open Windows Explorer. Under the Control Panel submenu (click on the
"plus" sign next to Control Panel), click on "Network
Connections". Click on File->New Connection.
- This will start the New Connection Wizard as shown below. Click "Next"

- Select "Connect to the Internet" and click "Next".

- Select "Setup my Connection manually" and click "Next".

- Select "Connect Using a Dialup Modem" and click "Next".

- Enter a suitable name as ISP. We have used "sbcs".

- Enter the correct phone number. If you are in the "631"
are code, then you need only enter as shown below. Otherwise, you need
to enter the complete number starting with 1 as in "16316327670".

- Depending on your needs, either select if this connection will be
used by everyone who uses your computer (other user accounts) or just
for yourself and click "Next".

- You can skip the username and password on the next screen. This is
not transmitted to the dialup server. However, you can disable the personal
firewall for this connection option (not recommended). Click "Next".

- On the last screen, enable to option "Create a shortcut on my
desktop" to create a shortcut (recommended). Click "Finish".

- Now go back to "Network Connections" under the Control
Panel submenu. You can go there also by going to Control Panel and in
the right window, select "Network and Internet Connections".
Then select "Network Connections".
- Right click on the connection we just created and click on "Properties".
- From here we have two options
- Now go to Internet Options under Control Panel. You can access it
also by starting Internet Explorer and then click on "Internet
Options" under the tools menu.
- Click on the Connections subwindow, and select "Dial whenever
a network connection is not present". This will prevent Windows
from dialing when you are connected to LAN or wireless.

- Click Ok.
- To connect either double click on the shortcut on your desktop of
start Internet Explorer (sometimes you have to press the Refresh button
since IE starts working in offline mode). Click on Dial. If you selected
to connect in the "automatic" method, then you are done. If
you selected manual connection, then a black terminal window will pop
up after you modem establishes a connection to the department. In place
of user name, enter your department username. Enter the password, when
prompted to do so. The password is hidden and will not be displayed.
When a prompt "csterm3:" follows, type ppp and hit enter.
As soon as you see junk characters, hit "continue". A small
icon should appear at the bottom right of your taskbar indication that
you are connected. This step has to be repeated every time you connect
to the CS department.
