About the Department
The Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University is a leading center for research and education, with a long history of innovation in the field. Since our founding in 1969, the department has grown into one of the nation’s top computer science programs, currently ranked #24 by CSRankings.com.
Our students gain a strong foundation in core areas like algorithms and systems while exploring advanced fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, big data, visual computing, human-computer interaction, and software engineering.
As one of the largest departments at Stony Brook, we are home to more than 2,000 students, including over 1,400 undergraduates, 400 master’s students, and 250 Ph.D. students. Students learn from faculty who are leaders in their fields and take part in research that addresses real-world challenges.
Our Programs
We offer undergraduate and graduate programs in Computer Science, Information Systems, and Data Science. The Computer Science Honors Program provides additional opportunities for advanced coursework, faculty mentorship, and research experience.
Our graduates are well-prepared for careers in industry and research, with nearly all students securing positions in their field after graduation.
