Accelerated Computer Science BSMS Program
The accelerated Bachelor of Science-Master of Science in Computer Science program allows high-achieving Computer Science majors to earn both their B.S. and M.S. degrees by seamlessly bridging undergraduate and graduate studies, students streamline their coursework and accelerate their entry into advanced tech careers or doctoral research.
Advantage of the BS/MS Program
The primary advantage of the accelerated program is time and cost efficiency. Undergraduate students may take up to three graduate lecture courses (9 credits) during their undergraduate studies, which can be applied to both their undergraduate and graduate degrees. These graduate CSE courses can be applied as technical electives toward the Computer Science BS degree.
Applying to the Accelerated BS/MS Program
Stony Brook Computer Science majors are encouraged to apply for admission during their junior year. However, applications may also be submitted up to one full semester before graduation, provided the following requirements are met:
- Cumulative GPA: A minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
- CSE Technical GPA: A minimum GPA of 3.25 in required core and advanced computer science technical courses.
- Coursework: Completion of a minimum of three upper-division technical CSE courses taken at Stony Brook University.
Applications are reviewed twice a year by the Computer Science Graduate Admissions Committee:
- Fall Admission Deadline: July 1st
- Spring Admission Deadline: January 1st
Required Application Materials:
- Application Form
- Resume: Current resume submitted in PDF format.
- Statement of Purpose: A 1 to 2 page PDF explaining why you want to pursue an advanced degree and your plans after graduation.
- References: Names and email addresses for 2 or 3 references. At least one must be a current Computer Science faculty member. Others should be professionals in the field (instructors, internship mentors, or managers).
Admission to the MS program is considered provisional (the Graduate School mandates that BSMS students complete at least two graduate courses during their undergraduate studies with a minimum grade of C before transition to the MS degree). In addition, transition to the MS degree is contingent upon maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students who fail to meet this GPA threshold are subject to dismissal from the BS/MS program.
