CS Alums are 40 Under Forty Honorees

 

Since 2014, ever year Stony Brook University has recognized 40 exceptional individuals under the age of forty as honorees, each of whom exemplifies the spirit of Stony Brook.

Among those on this year’s list of honorees are four outstanding Department of Computer Science graduates!

As the Stony Brook Alumni Association celebrates the accomplishments of these 40 lifelong Seawolves on January 9 in New York City, the Department of Computer Science congratulates Daniel Kivatinos ’01 ’02, Michael Nusimov ’01, Rahul Alreja ’06, and Jalal Mahmud ’08.

Prof. Samir Das, interim chair of the department, said. “We are amazed at how much these individuals have grown since they earned their degrees at Stony Brook. The department takes great pride in its students going ‘Far Beyond,’ and that’s exactly what these four alum have done.”

Daniel Kivatinos, a member of the classes of 2001 and 2002, partnered with fellow class of 2001 graduate Michael Nusimow to form drchrono. The company, based in Silicon Valley, was the first to build an electronic health record (EHR) application for iPhones and iPads.

Kivatinos, the COO, and Nusimow, the CEO, are aiming to revolutionize how people engage and experience healthcare. drchrono provides “a comprehensive electronic health record, practice management, medical API and revenue cycle management platform which includes cloud based scheduling, clinical documentation, a patient portal and billing software which improve the quality of patient care,” according to its website.

In 2014 and 2015, the duo’s organization was named to Inc magazine’s list of 500 fastest growing companies in America. It currently hosts more than 93,000 physicians who serve more than six million patients.

Rahul Alreja ‘06 earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Over a decade after completing his education at Stony Brook, Alreja is thriving after launching VJ Inspection Services.

As Alreja serves as the president of VJ Inspection Services, the company focus on “inspecting digital high-energy radiography, CT, patented crawlers and other leading technologies combined with our proprietary Vi3 software suite bring you world-class inspection capabilities.”

Besides running that company, he also is the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Psocratic. Psocratic is an “emotional well-being software enhances the employee experience to help organizations attract, engage and elevate their workforce.”  The organization utilizes psychology and engagement technology to identify ways companies can change the way its employees are treated. With a combination of working with groups and individuals, Psocratic offers custom coaching, along with leadership development and data analysis to see how the program is working.

Jalal Mahmud earned his master’s degree in computer science in 2006 at Stony Brook, followed by his PhD two years later. Once he left Stony Brook, he began working at IBM as a researcher at its Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California.

Since 2015, he has been a master inventor and he has been issued 27 patents. With his work, he’s led research on multiple IBM Watson products, including personality insight, tone analyzer and emotion modeling. Mahmud is a senior researcher leading social computing and intelligent user initiatives, with 70-plus top-rated publications and several best paper nominations.

Nominees for the 40 Under Forty Alumni Awards were made by anyone who knows the nominee and had access to the required supporting information (including but not limited to a colleague, client, employer, family member, peer or member of the University faculty and staff), along with self-nominations.

It is a thrill to congratulate these four individuals, along with the remaining 36 people named to this exclusive list, as they exhibit everything a Seawolf is and should be.
