The Department of Computer Science currently has over forty core-faculty members and is expected to recruit additional members in the next few years. There are five main active research areas in the department: visual computing, logic programming/database, concurrency/verification, computer systems, and algorithms. Detailed information on the research activities of these groups can be found on the department homepage.
The department is in a stage of significant expansion, including a new Computer Science building, along with the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT). The department is also associated with the New York Center for Computational Sciences (NYCCS) and New York Blue (ranked as one of the fastest supercomputers in the world).
Stony Brook enjoys close proximity to New York City and Long Island's majestic ocean beaches. Its school districts are highly ranked nationally. Opportunities for industrial collaborations abound with many high-profile IT companies close by as well as Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Moreover, the Department of Computer Science offers a congenial working environment.
