Computer Science Professor Wins SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

Stony Brook Computer Science (CS) Professor Kevin McDonnell has been selected for the 2021 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. The award acknowledges Professor McDonnell’s well-earned reputation as an extraordinary teacher.

Year after year, Professor McDonnell has earned high praise from his students in his very popular introductory courses for non-CS majors, but also in sophomore-level courses for CS majors. In course evaluations, students remark on the academic rigor of his courses, laude his teaching ability, and enthusiasm for teaching. Professor McDonnell maintains high standards in his courses and expects his students to strive for success.

Professor McDonnell also serves as the CS Undergraduate Program Director, a program with 1200+ students and one of the largest majors on campus. He is the primary departmental contact regarding advising in the CS major and minor, or who have declared an interest in CS.  He also oversees the CS curricula and leads the necessary accreditation efforts. Over time, Professor has made numerous contributions to academic advising, program development, diversity, inclusion and outreach in the CS department.

Congratulations to Professor McDonnell on this well deserved recognition by SUNY for his contributions to the Stony Brook University academic community.
