Curvature is the Hero in New Book by Gu and Saucan

Classical and Discrete Differential Geometry

Computer science professor David Xianfeng Gu along with Emil Saucan recently published the book, Classical and Discrete Differential Geometry: Theory, Applications and Algorithms.

With this book, the authors aim to provide mathematics and computer science students as well as researchers and engineering professionals with a reference into “graphics and imaging, complex networks, and differential geometry and curvature.”

Primarily focused on curvature and the working parts that are involved in the development of differential geometry, the three parts of the book deal with elementary differential geometry, higher dimensional manifolds, and the computational algorithms in algebraic topology and conformal geometry.

“Still, we believe our book is highly original, its originality lying in the natural manner in which the classical, smooth differential geometry always taught blends in a synergistic manner with the modern discrete differential geometry in all its facets, and applications: graphics and imaging, physics, networks, etc,” Gu and Saucan prefaced.

The book can be purchased from Routledge’s website and is also on display in the New Computer Science building.

About the Authors
Surface Meshing – Mesh generation for surfaces using conformal uniformizationDavid Xianfeng Gu is a SUNY Empire Innovation Professor at Stony Brook University. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science from Harvard University. Gu's research interest lies in computer graphics, computational conformal geometry, geometric modeling, networking, medical imaging visualization and computer vision. While focusing on applying modern geometry in engineering and medical fields, he also systematically develops discrete theories and computational algorithms in the field of computational conformal geometry.
