How to add a calendar to the Thunderbird Email Client

Follow these instructions for each calendar you wish to sync.

  1. Find the XML Address of the calendar you wish to sync. (For each calendar you wish to sync.)
    1. In the calendar list on the left side of the calendar page, click the down-arrow button next to a calendar, then select Calendar Settings.

  1. At the bottom of the screen under the heading Calendar Address click XML
  2. You will be prompted with the unique XML calendar address of this calendar. Either copy this address to an open word or text document or leave this window open. You will need the address later in the setup.
  1. Install the necessary calendar utilities for syncing Google Calendars to Thunderbird. (Only once.)
    1. In the upper right hand corner click on the Menu/Settings button.

  1. Click Add-ons

  1. In the upper right hand corner of the Add-ons Manager search for Lightning.
  2. Click the Install button next to Lightning

  1. Once the download and installation completes search again for Provider for Google Calendar

  1. Once the download and installation completes click the link that says Restart Now.

  1. Synchronize your calendar. (For each calendar you wish to sync.)
    1. In the upper right hand corner click on the Menu/Settings button.

  1. Click on the arrow next to the button that says New Message

  1. Select Calendar…

  1. Select On the network… and click Continue.
  2. On the Format Page select Google Calendar
  3. In the Location field paste the XML address of your Google Calendar (From part I)

  1. After you click Next you will be prompted to authenticate. Use your full email addres @cs.stonybrook.edu and your Computer Science password.
    1. Check the box next to Use Password Manager to remember this password.
  2. Click Ok.
  3. Name the calendar and select a unique color for it to appear in Thunderbird.     
    1. Click Contiune
    2. Click Done
  4. In the upper right hand corner of the screen click on the calendar icon to open the calendar tab in Thunderbird.

    1. Right click on the calendar name under the list of calendars on the calendar tab.
    2. Click Delete Calendar
