CS Celebrates Women’s History

 

In a department that always seems to be on fast-forward, the Department of Computer Science is set on “pause” as it celebrates the accomplishments of women in computer science as part of Women’s History Month.  

“We focus our attention this month on women who have made monumental strides in computer science research who have dedicated themselves to educating others,” says Ari Kaufman, distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook.

This month’s events in the computer science department were organized by the student group Women in Computer Science (WiCS) as well as women CS faculty Jie Gao, Annie Liu, and Jing Chen. The mission of WiCS is to support undergraduate and graduate women students seeking opportunity and an education in the field of computing. WiCS fosters an understanding between men and women in computer science which benefits a broad range of stakeholders.

March  8 – International Women’s Day

The WiCS speaker series presents Tech Ladies at the Top with presenter Laurie Carey, Founder and Executive Director of We Connect the Dots. As part of the WiCS Speaker Series, Carey will present "Tech Ladies at the Top". All are welcome! Meet and Greet in Room 220 at 1p and talk will immediately follow at 2:30p, New Computer Science, Room 120.

 

 

 

 

March 9 – CS Co-Hosts WiNGS Seminar

CS is co-hosting a School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SOMAS) WiNGS Seminar, Broadening the Computer Science Community: Examining successful strategies for significantly increasing diversity in STEM fields”.

President Maria Klawe, Harvey Mudd College is presenting at 1:30p in the Simons Center Auditorium.

March 10 – CS Distinguished Lecture Series

At the final computer science Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) event of the semester, the department will welcome Prof. Carla Gomes from Cornell University. Gomes will present Challenges for AI in Computational Sustainability. This event is co-hosted by Women in Computer Science (WiCS). March 10, 2:30p, Room 120, New Computer Science building.

 

 

 

 

 

March 29 – Women in Tech with Kristie D’Ambrosio-Correll

MIT grad, Kristie D’Ambrosio-Correll will inspire attendees as she tells students how she went from software engineer to the founder and CEO of the mobile app, MarryMapp. MarryMapp is the first and only wedding finance manager. D’Ambrosio-Correll’s talk will be taking place at 2:30p in Room 220, New Computer Science building.
