Towards A Fully Verified Artificial Pancreas.

Abstract:

The artificial pancreas (AP) is a device that automates insulin delivery for people with type-1 diabetes. As such, the
device is safety critical. Excessive insulin delivery can risk loss of consciousness, coma or even death. This motivates
attempts towards a full formal verification of such devices.

We will briefly summarize attempts at formal and semi-formal verification, motivated by other safety critical domains such as automotive systems, and related closed-loop medical devices. In doing so, we outline those aspects of AP systems that can be verified, given the current modeling and computational limitations. Next, we make the case for data-driven individualized approaches. We will examine an initial approach to data driven verification of a PID-based AP controller proposed by Steil et al. We will conclude by speculating on what "fully verified" means for the AP, and how this concept can be made meaningful in the light of anticipated advances in the next generation of AP devices.
