Securing an Online Future


The CS Department has one of the strongest cybersecurity groups in the country. Three CS faculty members R. Sekar, Michalis Polychronakis, and Nick Nikiforakis were featured in the Stony Brook University Magazine Fall 2020 Issue for their work on cybersecurity. The article discusses Polychronakis’ work developing new security defenses to resist phishing attacks, such as network monitoring and online privacy. Nikiforakis’ research on reducing the size of software, critical to reducing programming bugs, is highlighted as an important method to reducing vulnerabilities. Sekar is highlighted for his two decades experience researching cybersecurity, as well as his current area of focus on coordinated cyberattacks with a strategic purpose, such as stealing personal or financial information.
