Sept. 28 - The Science of Big Data

CS Professor Steven Skiena is presenting "The Science of Big Data" in conjunction with Science on Tap. Skiena is a data scientist, using powerful computers and sophisticated algorithms to dig out unexpected facts and surprising connections buried in the immense mounds of data the world now produces every day. In his conversation with host Steven Reiner, Skiena will reveal what can be learned from reading all of Wikipedia: programs that understand the world's languages, and insights into the strength of historical memes–like who is the more historical significant figure, Washington or Lincoln, Hitler or Napoleon–and how women are under-represented in the historical record.

Science on Tap is a live, award-winning show and web series produced by Stony Brook University's Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. To RSVP, please complete the online form »
