Siemens Semi-Finalist Mentored by CS Team

Professor Minh Hoai Nguyen and PhD student Yang Wang mentored successful high school student

All of the work during the summer of 2017 paid off for Justin Zhang and his mentors from the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook University. Justin learned in October 2017 that his research made it to the semi-final round of the prestigious Siemens Competition.

Justin, a high school student at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology in Alexandria, VA, worked with Professor Minh Hoai Nguyen and PhD student Yang Wang on the project Hand Detection in Video with Optical Flow using the Single-Shot MultiBox Detector.

The goal of the research was to explore deep learning techniques to automate hand detection with supervised learning. Justin developed an algorithm that combined appearance and motion cues for automatic detection of human hands in video. His method outperforms the previous state-of-the-art approaches, and it is useful for analyzing video and recognizing human activities.

The work was conducted through the Computer Vision Lab at Stony Brook.

Congratulations to Justin on this major accomplishment!
