Forty computing researchers from academia and industry took part in the two-day intensive course focused on science policy issues and the policymaking process. The goal of the event was to empower researchers to become an active part of science policy discussions. The event included presentations and discussions from science policy practitioners, providing insight to the legislative process, as well as how to make a case for federal research funding.

Key figures in Washington, such as Julia Jester of Association of American Universities, Matt Hourihan of the Federation of American Scientists, and officials from the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, spoke at LiSPI. By receiving real-world experience and helpful guidance, participants are more prepared to interact with policymakers.

Topics that were addressed in panel discussions included the federal budget process, explaining the value of research, providing insightful feedback in meetings with policymakers, as well as suitable procedures when interacting with Congress.

Mueller, who is a professor in CS and interim chair of the Department of Technology & Society, described the event as a “great experience, and very useful.”

The event highlights how crucial it is for computing researchers to participate in talks about science policy in order to affect national policies.
